Basirhat, North 24 Pargana: United Sports Club rode on Dipankar Das’ second half strike to lift the 100th Carmichael Shield 2015, as the Purple Bridage ease Bhawanipore FC 1-0 in the final played at the BSSA Football Ground in Basirhat here on Saturday.
In the presence of dignitaries like Idris Ali, MP Basirhat along side former and current India internationals Goutam Sarkar, Alok Das, Dipendu Biswas, Lalkamal Bhowmick & Mohammed Rafique and bengali film actress Sampurna Lahiri; United SC made a bright start to the proccedings and almost got the lead in the 24th minute when Joshua Morris’ header from a Jagannath Oraon corner missed the target for couple of inches. United SC had another chance through free-kick taken by Jagnnath Oraon in the 33rd minute which was saved by the Bhawanipore FC custodian. Meanwhile Bhawanipore FC also created some good moves in patches but those were not enough to penetrate the United SC defence, However Bhawanipore FC were dealt a major blow in the 41st minute when Indrajit Das got his marching orders following a foul on Joshua Morris.
Thus the teams went into the dressing room at half-time locked goalless.
After resumption United SC kept pressing on the rival defence and were eventually rewarded in the 56th minute when Dipankar Das headed the ball home from a corner taken by Jagannath Oroan.
Thereafter, United SC pressed even harder to score an insurance goal, whereas 10-men Bhawanipore went all out for the equaliser in the remainder of the half, but despite a host of chances in the either side of the pitch no more goals to be found in the match.
United SC coach Madhusudan Majumder adjudged best coach of the tournament, while Prantik SC, Basirhat’s Suraj Biswas and United SC’s Farid Ali Mondal named man of the tournament and man of the match respectively.
“This win is something special for not only me but for entire United SC Family. In this tournament we started from where we finished in the IFA Shield.” Madhusudan Majumder said.
