Chittagong, October 20, 2015: East Bengal scored a 2-1 win over Chittagong Abahani Limited, in their opening tie of Sheikh Kamal International Club Championship, at M.A. Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on Tuesday.
The visitors surged ahead in the 32nd minute through Mohammed Rafique, who tapped the ball home from a centre by Avinabo Bag. East Bengal doubled their advantage when Prohlad Roy scored from a Avinash Ruidas cross in the 72nd minute. Meanwhile, the home side did get some consolation when Hemanta Biswas Vincent’s attempted cross took a deflection from Bello Rasaq on its way to the back of the net, in the 78th minute.
The red & gold brigade held on to the lead for remainder of the match, and made sure a winning start to their capaign in Bangladesh.
“We have won the
match, but this was far from our best performance. My boys are capable of playing much better than these and I am sure they will do it in coming games,” East Bengal coach Biswajit Bhattacharya said in post-match press conference.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Abahani Limited beat Karachi Electric 3-2, earlier in the day at the same venue, to inaugurate the tournament.
Dhaka Abahani took the lead first courtesy Wali Faisal in the 24th minute, before Sunday Chizoba doubled it six minutes later. The Pakistan outfit responded in the 75th minute through Mohammad Rasool, but three minutes later a Umar Farooq own goal took the match out of their reach. Meanwhile Karachi Electric reduced the margin during the additional time, when Oludeyi Sunday converted from the spot.
East Bengal would face Karachi Electric next on Thursday (October 22) at 4 pm IST, followed by the clash of Abahanis scheduled to start at 7 pm IST.
