Chittagong, October 24, 2015: East Bengal and Chittagong Abahani are through to the knock-out stage of Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup 2015, as winners and runners-up from Group – B respectively.
East Bengal played out a barren scoreless stalemate against Dhaka Abahani at M.A. Aziz Stadium on Friday.
Having won their earlier two fixtures against Chittagong Abahani and Karachi Electric, going into the contest the red and gold brigade were in pole position to qualify for the semi-finals. Wereas, it was a must win match for the sky blue brigade of Dhaka.
Dhaka Abahani dominated most of the proccedings with better allround footballing skills, but only the finishing touch was lacking from the Dhaka outfit, which knocked them out of the tournament. On other hand East Bengal did create some decent moves in patches but failed to convert with Ranti Martins and Orok Orok Eassien upfront.
The match witnessed a show of goalkeeping brilliance from East Bengal keeper Dibyendu Sarkar, and rightfuly adjudged man of the match for his efforts.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the hosts Chittagong Abahani registered a comfortable 4-2 win over Karachi Electric in other Group – B encounter played at the same venue.
Chittagong Abahani took the lead through Mohamed Zahid Hossain in the 10th minute, before Kingsley Chigozie doubled the advantage two minutes later.
However, Karachi Electric responded through Muhammad Rasool in the 20th minute, but it was Zahid who once again increased the advantage for the Chittagong Abahani in the 34th minute.
Just four minutes before the half-time Rasool struck from the spot to reduce the margin for the Pakistani side.
Despite down to 10-man in the second-half after Yussif Issah was sent-off in the 66th minute, Chittagong Abahani showed character under pressure and did not only held onto the lead but increased it further to 4-2 in the 83rd minute through Zahid, who converted from the spot to record the first hattrick of the tournament.
