Newly promoted top flight side Chawnpui FC pulled of a stunning upset as they beat two time champions Chanmari FC in a 3-1 victory.
A brace from Vanlalthanga and a goal from David Laltlansanga ensured a first every MPL victory for Chawnpui FC.
Chanmari FC suffered a second successive defeat in the league after they were beaten by another newly promoted side Electric Veng FC in round 4.
And like in the previous round, it was a set play that became their downfall when Vanlalthanga struck a sweet freekick on the 19th minute. Chanmari FC’s makeshift defence could not cope with Chawnpui FC’s counter attacks and soon conceded another through David Lalchhuanawma.
Chanmari did manage to carve out chances in the first half through Vanlalbiaa Chhangte and Lalnunzama but Chawnpui did enough to hold on to their lead in the first half.
Chawnpui FC looked set to protect their lead in the second half as Chanmari FC pushed on for a goal. Mark Zothanpuia and frontman Zama missed good opportunities while Laldampuia provided the spark from wide areas.
And the former champions finally found the net through Lalnunzama, with the striker having the distinction of netting in every round this season.
But Chanmari FC could not spark a comeback as the shining Vanlalthanga scored their third late into stoppage time to give his side a well earned three points.
Chawnpui are on six points from five matches, Chanmari on seven points.
