CFL 2019/20: Tirthankar’s Blinder Gives Mohammedan A Point Against Aryan

KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club began their campaign in the 2019/20 Calcutta Premier Division A with a 1-1 draw against Aryan Club on Wednesday at Mohammedan Sporting Ground.

It was a game that didn’t have many open scoring chances, but the Black Panthers will take the result anyway.

Aryan took the lead through Ademola Kuti in the 11th minute. Nonetheless, Mohammedan struck back just three minutes later when Tirthankar Sarkar scored a spectacular goal straight from corner to share the spoils.

The thunderous outpour of rain made life difficult for both the teams and both adjusted to playing on a wet surface, with neither taking the risk of attacking.

Mohammedan, however, dominated possession from the first whistle and fired the first warning shots, with Arthur Kouassi forcing a save from Subhadip Baneerjee in the second minute, and Mohammed Amirul doing the same four minutes later.

Aryan, on the other hand, were always looking to catch the Black Panthers on the counter and succeeded in the 11th minute as Kuti got the better of Arijit Singh before slotting past Moniruzzaman Ansari, who was playing his first match for Mohammedan.

Having conceded, Mohammedan SC began attacking with intensity and it only took three minutes to equalise as Tirthankar scored an amazing goal from corner to level the score at 1-1.

From the goal onwards, Mohammedan looked more comfortable amongst themselves, with some great strings of passes pieced together in the middle. The Aryan defence, while under pressure at this stage, held firm as the scoreline remained one-goal-a-piece going into the breather.

The second-half was more of the same as Mohammedan creating most of the chances and Aryan looked to pounce on the counter with a few moments of brilliance. One such was in the 58th minute when the industrious Satyam Sharma weaved his way to the edge of the box before playing a one-two with Kouassi but his shot went into the keeper’s waiting arms.

While it was expected that Mohammedan would rise in attack and try get the winner, it was Aryan who had more chances to score through Kuti and Emmanuel Ejiogu, but they couldn’t get anything past Moniruzzaman Ansari.

Mohammedan will now shift focus to Durand Cup when they take on Indian Navy in a Group B fixture on August 10 at Howrah Stadium.
