KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan, for the final match before the semi-final, faced off against Indian Navy at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday.
Thankfully for the fans, rain did not interfere today’s game. A few missed chances from Mohun Bagan meant the scoreboard was stuck at 0-0 till the half-time.
In the second-half, Dalraj Singh made a bad tackle on Sheikh Faiaz in the penalty box. Referee signalled for a penalty and Francisco Gonzalez Munoz calmly scored to give Mohun Bagan a lead of 1-0. The Spaniard was also adjudged the Man of the Match.
Had that tackle not happened, Mohun Bagan would have had a hard time to defeat Navy, who foiled every plan of Mohun Bagan to score a goal in the first half. They got quite a few chances themselves, however, a relatively inexperienced side could not convert them.
Thus ends Indian Navy’s journey for this year’s Durand Cup. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, have already qualified for the semis where they will face Real Kashmir, August 21, 7:30 PM onwards at VYBK, Saltlake.
