KOLKATA: Chennai City FC met Army Green for the final match of Group C earlier today at Kalyani Stadium. Army Green struck early at the 11th minute when skipper Lallawmkima netted a goal to give his team an early lead. Unfortunately for the defending champions, they could not hold Chennai City FC for too long as just a couple of minutes before half-time, Mashoor Sheriff, the CCFC captain scored the equaliser. Chennai City FC scored the second goal of the match, when Shem Eugene netted one, coming on the field as a substitute. Thus when the final whistle was heard, the scoreboard read 2-1 in favour of Chennai City.
Thus it was a prolific day for CCFC as they take a final bow from the 129th edition of Durand Cup with a win. Real Kashmir, from the same group, meanwhile, have already qualified for the 2nd semi-final where they will face Mohun Bagan at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on August 21.
Elsewhere, Chennaiyin FC and Air Force pitted against each other at the Mohun Bagan ground in an Group D clash. Air Force began their journey on a winning note although they failed to continue with the momentum. Chennaiyin’s previous match got washed out and they were evidently hungry to sign off with a win. The final match, however, ended in a humdinger as the scoreboard displayed 0-0, even after 90 minutes of play. Sporadic attacks from both the teams unfortunately could not change the scoreline. Thus ended both Chennaiyin’s and Air Force’s journey in this edition’s Durand Cup.
