Kolkata, August 18: Marcus Joseph continued his scoring streak in the Durand Cup with another hat-trick as Gokulam Kerala FC defeated TRAU FC, 4-1, in the final Group ‘D’ match of the Malabarians on Sunday.
As Gokulam have already entered the semifinals, Fernando Varela tried out a fresh lineup by resting six of the players, who started against Air Force. Still, Malabarians were able to come with up a bright display of football that trounced 10-man TRAU FC, the club from Manipur.
Malabarians breakthrough came when TRAU FC goalie Gurpreet Singh was shown red card following an incident outside the penalty box in the 41st minute of the match. TRAU was reduced to ten men without their first team goalkeeper.
The red card turned the momentum of the match and Gokulam Kerala FC were able to capitalise it to their advantage after a lull start.
Malabarians captain Marcus Joseph drew the first blood as he scored from a superb pass by Bruno Pellisary, who was subbed in, few minutes ago.
It was just the start of Marcus rampage as Gokulam was soon awarded a penalty for fouling him. The captain made no mistakes as he gave a two-goal cushion for the Malabarians.
His fellow country man Andre Ettienne extended the lead by three goals as his perfect header off a corner found the target. Marcus scored another superb goal as Rahul KP found him unmarked in the box in the 83 rd minute. That was his eighth goal from three matches in the tournament.
However Gokulam were not able to keep the clean sheet as TRAU were awarded an injury time penalty. The penalty taker Roger M made no mistakes but it was too late for the Manipur side for a comeback.
