KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan jumped to the top of the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ log after beating George Telegraph 4-0 on Sunday at Mohun Bagan Ground.
The Mariners have 11 points in 6 matches leading second-placed Peerless SC by one point who will take on East Bengal tomorrow.
The opening 10 minutes was a rather scrappy affair, with both teams unable to hold onto the ball long enough to create any decent scoring opportunities.
Nonetheless, the Mariners were the first to find their rhythm, dominating ball as well as territorial possession and deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute through Suhair VP’s well struck header from Lalramchullova’s cross
Mohun Bagan then continued to have the majority of possession and chances in front of goal with Joseba Beitia combining well with Suhair and Salva Chamorro to create opportunities they were often unlucky not to score from.
Nonetheless, George Telegraph weren’t without chances of their own, but between some solid defending and the safe hands of goalkeeper Debjit Majumder, the attackers were unable to get an edge on their opponent.
Chamorro doubled the advantage for Mohun Bagan in the 34th minute as a right-footed inswinger from Gurjinder Singh outside the box found Chamorro within the box who headed past a clueless Laltu Mondal.
George Telegraph looked well out of their depth throughout the first-half and went into the break trailing 2-0, with a mountain to climb in the second stanza.
The Mariners started the second-half like a house on fire, and it was evident from the very beginning that Kibu Vicuna’s charges were going to collect full points as George Telegraph was outclassed in all departments.
Mohun Bagan never really looked troubled by George Telegraph’s efforts on attack and they were to get a further insurance goal in the 71st minute when Nongdomba Naorem scored from Lalramchullova’s pass to put the game to the bed.
The Mariners did not take their foot off the accelerator and continued to dominate proceedings and Fran Gonzalez increased the lead further in the 84th minute after Naorem from the left sent a short lob towards the centre finding Gonzalez who headed it to the far post.
