KOLKATA: Bhawanipore FC dented Mohammedan Sporting Club’s title hopes in the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ after beating them 3-0 on Wednesday at Mohammedan Sporting Ground.
Three points were enough for Sankarlal Chakraborty’s charges to go level on points with log leaders Peerless SC (13 points), but trail to an inferior goal-difference.
Nobody was doubting Bhawanipore’s talent and credentials going into the game, however it’s hard to imagine many could foresee the relentless way they went about their work, from the outset till the final whistle, as they dismantled their opponent.
Mohammedan SC didn’t need extra motivation to follow up their win against Kalighat MS with another winning performance which could send them level on top of the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ log.
However, Bhawanipore had other ideas and wasted little time to make their intentions clear through Leonce Dodoz who showed plenty of composure to beat Mohammedan keeper Subham Roy in a one-on-one situation on the 9th minute mark.
Bhawanipore continued to have the majority of possession and chances in front of goal with Dodoz combining well with his fellow Ivorian compatriot Bayi Kamo to create opportunities they were often unlucky not to score from.
Nonetheless, as the match progressed, it looked like an equaliser was almost certainly on the horizon for Mohammedan SC as they dominated possession and kept Bhawanipore goalkeeper Abhijit Das working hard.
However, by pushing forward the Black Panthers have left themselves exposed and vulnerable at the back and Bhawanipore took full advantage against the run of play when they doubled their advantage in the 35th minute after Dodoz picked out Kamo’s pass to produce a fine strike into the top-right corner.
With Bhawanipore taking a two-goal lead, the Black Panthers had to throw caution to the wind as they launched a wave of attacks on the Bhawanipore defence, however couldn’t find a way to break down that final line as they went into the break trailing 2-0, with a mountain to climb in the second stanza.
Mohammedan SC continued to show their fighting spirit in the second-half as they pushed hard to find a goal which would keep them in the match, but between some solid defending and the safe hands of Abhijit, the attackers were unable to get an edge on their opponent.
Bhawanipore defence looked comfortable in absorbing Mohammedan SC’s attacking pressure, while looking to catch their opponents off-guard on the counter.
As the clock counted down, Mohammedan SC threw everything they had to get back into the game forcing a number of saves from Abhijit, however Bhawnipore flexed their scoring muscles once again in the 72nd minute with Kamo tapping in from close range to put the result beyond any doubt.
