KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan returned to the winning ways in Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ when they beat Rainbow Athletic Club 1-0 on Sunday evening at flood-lit Kalyani Stadium.
In a match that was devoid of much action and chances infront of goal, Subho Ghosh came off the bench to find the net with a clinical header which earned full three points for Mohun Bagan.
Mohun Bagan looked sharp from the outset pressing high and controlling possession with their quick and accurate passing game inside Rainbow’s half.
Nongdamba Naorem was particularly impressive both on the wing and inside the box as the Mariners have set up camp in front of their opponents’ goal reducing Rainbow’s options to a few counter attacking attempts.
Kibu Vicuna’s men should have taken the lead at the half-hour mark when Suhair VP found himself in a clear goal scoring position failing to control an excellent cross by Naorem and the ball bounced off his knee and above Rainbow keeper Ankur Das’ crossbar.
Less than five minutes later Mohun Bagan created an even better chance with Naorem sending in a pinpoint cross from the right towards Fran Gonzalez who narrowly missed the target from close range.
Despite the onslaught Rainbow have kept their composure and shape to absorb pressure and frustrate Mohun Bagan, holding them to a scoreless stalemate at the end of the first-half.
With Mohun Bagan struggling to open up Rainbow’s well organised defence and the game opening up, Soumik Dey’s charges have sensed their opportunity on the counter.
Against the run of play, the lively Felix Chidi forced a good save from Debjit Majumder, before finding space on the right with a strong run and sending in an inviting cross which sailed across the Mohun Bagan goalmouth.
With tension building, Subho who came in as a substitute for Britto PM in the 53rd minute, stamped his authority on the proceedings by heading home from a corner by Joseba Beitia in the 65th minute to settle his team’s nerves.
Nonetheless, Rainbow remained determined to get back into the game as they fought hard to not only keep themselves in the match but to try and find a goal which would help them secure at least a point.
Unfortunately the front line continued to fire off-target while Mohun Bagan started to establish a comfortable rhythm whenever they found themselves in possession making it tough for their opponents to impose their game.
It also meant Mohun Bagan found themselves in control for much of the second-half allowing them to deny Rainbow a much desired comeback, and at the end Subho’s lone goal proved to be enough to decide the thrilling encounter.
Three points were enough for Mohun Bagan to go level on points with log leaders Peerless SC (14 points), but trail to an inferior goal-difference. Mohun Bagan will face Mohammedan Sporting Club next on September 19 at VYBK Stadium.
