BARASAT: Peerless Sports Club moved within touching distance of the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ title after playing to a 1-0 win over Rainbow Athletic Club at Barasat Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Jahar Das-coached side dominated the match and should have won by a far more convincing margin, but the result nonetheless took them back to the top of the table with 20 points from 10 matches, and given their far better goal difference (+11 compared to East Bengal’s +7) Peerless effectively just need to beat George Telegraph in their last match of the campaign to claim their maiden Calcutta Premier Division title.
Determined to make amends for their devastating defeat to Mohammedan in the previous match, Peerless threw everything they had to impose their will on their opponents during the early exchanges.
Led by their talismanic striker Ansumana Krpmah, Peerless looked a different side to the one that was taught a footballing lesson only a few days ago.
And their efforts were soon rewarded courtesy of Dipendu Dowary’s well worked goal which started in midfield before the winger was played on 1v1 with goalkeeper Ankur Das, who got a hand to the shot which proved too powerful to halt.
Peerless’ spirits were lifted by the goal and they played out the remainder of the first-half with a lot of energy, which they brought with them when they returned from the break.
But they weren’t the only ones. Determined not to lose a fifth straight match, Rainbow fought hard to not only keep themselves in the match but to try and find a goal which would help them secure at least a deserved point.
Unfortunately the front line continued to fire off-target while Peerless started to establish a comfortable rhythm whenever they found themselves in possession making it tough for their opponents to impose their game.
It also meant Peerless found themselves in control for much of the second-half allowing them to deny Rainbow a much desired comeback.
