Durga of Indian Football to coach Indian team at 2020 U-17 Women’s World Cup

KOLKATA: News coming out from Manipur is that ‘Durga of Indian Football’ Oinam Bembem Devi is set to be appointed as the head coach of India’s U-17 Women’s team in 2020 World Cup to be held next year in November.

As per a report published by the largest circulated daily of Manipur, The Sangai Express, Bembem Devi was named as the head coach by All India Football Federation considering her expertise in the field and asked to join the selection trial camp to be held in Kalyani, West Bengal from November 3 to 10 and from November 11 to 19. 

Bembem Devi, arguably the finest footballer that the Indian women’s game has ever produced, led India to two SAFF Women’s Championship titles in 2012 and 2014 and has 32 international goals to her name in 85 appearances.

Her exemplary career and a dedication to the sport that still endures 3 years after retirement got recognition by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports two years back when she became the only second women footballer to be conferred with Arjuna Award.
