KALYANI: Mohammedan Sporting Club logged their second win in the ongoing Calcutta Football League 2020/21 in as many matches when they beat Railway FC at Kalyani Stadium on Thursday.
Sheikh Faiaz (45+2′) and Azharuddin Mallick (61′) scored on either side of the pich to secure full three points for Mohammedan SC.
Mohammedan SC dominated first-half ball possession, but did not do much to threaten the opposition goal, while Railway FC, who were pressed back for the majority of the half, did well to absorb the pressure and looked dangerous on the few times they attacked.
The first-half was characterized by a lack of goal scoring opportunities from both sides. In the infant stages of the game, Mohammedan SC had shown promise with some impressive passes, but when they resorted to long balls, Railway FC dealt with them with confidence.
However, the Black Panthers were rewarded for their persistent efforts as Faiaiz ran on to a pass from Faisal Ali and rifled a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Avijit Kar in stoppage time to give his side the lead going into the breather.
Mohammedan SC goalkeeper Zothanmawia was a spectator in the first-half, but he saw more action in the second, keeping out an angled drive from Achinta Ghosh before twice having to punch away an awkward aerial ball in the 54th minute as Railway FC began to put more pressure on the Mohammedan SC defense looking for the equalizer.
Despite the momentum turning in Railway FC’s favour, Mohammedan SC fought back to add a second when Azharuddin slotted home from close range in the 61st minute.
Railway FC, to their credit, never gave up but it appeared as if getting on the score sheet just wasn’t to be for the side today with every shot going anywhere but on target as Mohammedan SC held on for a well-deserved win.
Mohammedan SC will now shift focus to Durand Cup as Andrey Chernyshov’s charges will face Indian Air Force in the opener on September 5 at Saltlake Stadium, while Railway FC will take on Bhwanipore FC on the very same day in their fourth CFL encounter at Howrah Stadium.
