Kolkata: SC East Bengal has completed the signing of former Perth Glory defender Tomislav Mrcela, who has previously been linked with Bengaluru FC, as their second foreign signing. The club announced via twitter.
The SC East Bengal defense line which conceded a total of 33 goals in 20 matches — only two bottom-placed teams let in more — looked shaky and vulnerable throughout the ISL, and it was bound to undergo an overhaul and Mrcela has emerged as an ideal fit. The Aussie international will add solidity and experience at the back for SC East Bengal.
“I am happy to have signed for SC East Bengal, and I have got good feedback about the club. I have friends who have played in India and also know a thing or two about the club, and they tell me how big it is in this part of the world,” said Mrcela, after signing on the dotted line for SC East Bengal.
“I will look to add experience at the heart of the defense and take care of the locker room as well. The atmosphere within the team is very important and I will leave no stone unturned in doing what needs to be done for the team’s benefit. I also know how passionate the fans are here and it’s unfortunate that they can’t be in the stands cheering us. We play for them and we will do everything we can to make them happy. I can’t wait to start the season,” he added.
The Perth-born and well-travelled Mrcela moved to Croatia with his family as a 9-year-old and joined the RNK Split academy in 2001, spending five years at the club where he was youth captain.
He then spent a season each at the Imotski, Mosor and Hrvatski Dragovoljac clubs and two years with Zagreb-based side Lokomotiva. In 2016, Mrcela signed for K-League side Jeonnam.
The 30-year-old joined Perth Glory in 2018 on a 2-year contract. During his stay at the club, he contributed massively and won the A-League premiership.
