KOLKATA: Indian football team began their AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers campaign on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Cambodia at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium).

Skipper Sunil Chhetri scored both the goals for the Blue Tigers on the either side of the pitch.

India started the match with more purpose as they threw everything they had to impose their will on their opponents during the early exchanges.

And their efforts were soon rewarded in the 12th minute when Chhetri converted from the spot to put the Blue Tigers ahead, after Liston Colaco was fouled inside the box.

Encouraged by their start, Igor Stimac’s charges piled on the pressure only to be denied by Cambodia goalkeeper Keo Soksela, who produced a string of brilliant saves to keep his side in the match.

India looked a lot more comfortable in the first-half, adopting a passing game that often had Cambodia giving chase rather than being able to control the game themselves.

That’s not to say the locals didn’t have their chances. Cambodia broke past the India back-line on several occasions and threatened with goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, however were failed to be as lethal as they needed to be in front of goal which saw the Blue Tigers went into the breather with a solitary goal lead.

The second half began the way the first half had ended in. In the 57th minute, across from the right flank by Brendon Fernandes found Chhetri inside the box and he made no mistake in scoring from the open header to double the home side’s advantage.

The remainder of the match was a frustrating time for Cambodia, who tried their best to reduce the margin. However India were able to comfortably see out the remainder of the game to the delight of their fans.
