USA thrash Honduras 3-0 to reach the final of the ongoing CONCACAF U-20 Championship on Friday at San Pedro Sula in Honduras.
Paxten Aaronson (3′), Alejandro Alvarado (22′) and Quinn Sullivan (43′) were on target for USA to set up a final with Dominican Republic and qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024 in the process.
USA looked dangerous from the outset and took the lead as early as the 3rd minute through Paxten Aaronson who scored from Brandan Craig’s pass.
Conceding so soon rattled Honduras and it took a fair while for the team to settle into the game as USA controlled the action keeping the locals contained in their half, and making sure Honduras goalkeeper Juergen García was kept busy.
USA then continued to have the majority of possession and chances in front of goal with Paxten Aaronson combining well with Caden Clark and Quinn Sullivan to create opportunities they were often unlucky not to score from.
Alejandro Alvarado then doubled the advantage for USA in the 20th minute, scoring a spectacular goal.
With USA taking a two-goal lead, Honduras had to throw caution to the wind as they launched a wave of attacks on the USA defence.
However, by pushing forward Honduras have left themselves exposed and vulnerable at the back, and Quinn Sullivan exploited this in the 43rd minute to make it 3-0.
Going into the second-half, USA continued to apply pressure and made some decent runs forward. Honduras, however, are not a side to give up lightly and despite trailing by three goals kept the intensity high, and the pressure on their opponents as they battled to find a way back into the match.
Although Honduras remained determined to get back into the game, unfortunately the front line continued to fire off-target while USA started to establish a comfortable rhythm whenever they found themselves in possession making it tough for their opponents to impose their game.
The remainder of the match was a frustrating time for Honduras, who tried their best to reduce the margin. However USA were able to comfortably see out the remainder of the game to the delight of their fans.
