ISL 5: Bheke strike hands Bengaluru 2-1 win over Pune

Bengaluru: It was the late, late show once again as Bengaluru FC became the first Indian Super League side to win six games in a row, beating FC Pune City 2-1 at the Fortress in what was a clash for the stands, at the Kanteerava Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Friday. Udanta Singh’s stunning opener (11′) was levelled with a Rahul Bheke own goal (15′) before the defender redeemed himself with a late strike (88’), his second in three games, to give Carles Cuadrat all three points.

Otherwise cautious starters, Bengaluru seemed in the mood from the get-go and Udanta chose an absolute stunner in the 11th minute for his second goal in as many games. Picking a pass from Harmajot Khabra, Udanta charged into the Pune box, sold Chhuantea a dummy and after sending his former teammate the wrong way, smashed the ball into the roof with his left.

Bengaluru could have gone two up a couple of minutes later when Chencho Gyeltshen’s goal-bound shot took deflections from defender Matt Mills and then goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh before going out for a corner.

But it took all of four minutes after conceding for Pune to get back on level terms, albeit with a little help from a Bengaluru shirt after Rahul Bheke turned a Marko Stankovic cross into his own goal at the near post.

Earlier, Bengaluru started with Rahul Bheke and Harmanjot Khabra in defensive positions with Albert Serran ruled out, having sustained a thigh injury in the previous clash against Delhi Dynamos. Midfielder Dimas Delgado returned to the starting eleven after serving his one-game suspension, in a midfield trio that included him, Xisco Hernandez and Erik Paartalu.

The unfortunate equaliser did nothing but spur Bengaluru to attack with even more gusto and how the half ended 1-1 will still take some explaining from the Blues. Bengaluru could have well scored the team goal of the season when Erik Paartalu’s overhead clearance in the Blues box sparked a swift counter that saw Udanta, Dimas, Xisco and Chencho play their part in getting the ball to Chhetri only to see the captain’s shot on target kept out by Kamaljit. This was before an unmarked Chencho sent a looping header over the bar from ten yards out.

With the ball refusing to roll in from close, Bengaluru decided to try from distance when Chhetri laid the ball off for Erik Paartalu to smash from twenty five yards out in the 45th minute. The hit flew fast and hard only come crashing off the crossbar, capping off a frustrating half for the home side.

Cuadrat brought on Semboi Haokip for Chencho a little over the hour mark, but Bengaluru’s luck refused to alter. With twenty minutes to play, Udanta found himself with the ball in the box, skipped past his man and fired against the angle of the post once again. But, with the minutes ticking out, the stands came alive once again, spurring the Blues into a flurry of attacks.

After shots from Chhetri and Xisco had been blocked, Nishu picked up a clearance from a corner before lobbing it deep into the area for Khabra, who acrobatically volleyed over Kamaljit and his defenders to find Bheke unmarked. The defender would make no mistake from two yards out, slotting home to give Bengaluru a lead they would protect until the very end.

The win sent Bengaluru five points clear at the top, despite playing a game lesser than second placed FC Goa. The Blues travel to Guwahati next, where they take on NorthEast United on December 5th.

Mohun Bagan sign ATK midfielder on loan

KOLKATA: ATK midfielder Shekh Faiaz will get the chance to revive his career after signing on loan for Mohun Bagan for the remainder of the season. Faiaz will be joining Mohun Bagan training from December 3, 2018.

The 23-year-old Faiaz will be hoping to resurrect his fortunes after struggling for regular game time at ATK‚ stunting his progress after he had been touted as a future star having excelled in Mohun Bagan last season.

Faiaz joined ATK from Mohun Bagan just before the 2018/19 Indian Super League but it comes as the Indian Super League side released the winger without the player kicking a ball for the team as he was deemed not what was needed by coach Steve Coppell.

The winger, who can play on either flank, featrued in all 21 games for the Mariners last season, starting in 11 of them and scoring three goals.

Jamshedpur Football Club sign midfielder from ATK

Jamshedpur, November 30, 2018: Jamshedpur FC are ecstatic to announce that the club has completed the signing of 21-year-old midfielder, Malsawmzuala on loan from ATK. The youngster has penned a deal with the the Jharkhand-based side and is now available to feature for the club for the remainder of the Indian Super League 2018/19 season.

Starting his footballing journey with his local club, Chanmari FC in Mizoram, Malsawmzuala quickly climbed the ladder and impressed the scouts at Bengaluru FC. The youngster joined BFC in 2015 and instantly became a regular in the side.

Malsawmzuala made important contributions for the club in I-League and also in the AFC Cup. He made 15 appearances for the club and scored 1 goal; a 30-yard stunner against East Bengal in a crucial I-League encounter.
Malsawmzuala also has Indian Super League experience under his belt as the boy from Mizoram had joined Delhi Dynamos on loan in 2016. He made four appearances that season for the Dynamos and also scored a goal against FC Pune City.

The youngster joined ATK ahead of the ongoing season but has not been able to garner regular playing time in the Steve Coppell managed side. Malsawmzuala will now be hoping to kick-start his ISL journey with Jamshedpur FC.

Malsawmzuala has also represented India at the U-19 level and was previously included in the Indian senior team squad for the World Cup qualifiers in 2016 alongside his soon to be teammate, Sumeet Passi. The midfielder is touted as a huge talent and is predicted by many to become the Indian midfield mainstay for the years to come.

Malsawmzuala is a defensive midfielder that excels in breaking up play and helping his side win back possession. He is also comfortable when on the ball and has an ability to test the opponents with his long-range shooting. The youngster will surely play a key role in the ongoing season for Jamshedpur FC with his ability to destruct and dictate the game from the centre of the park.

ISL 5: Subhasish Roy Chowdhury praised by Cesar Ferrando

MUMBAI: Jamshedpur FC coach Cesar Ferrando was delighted with his side’s clinical 2-0 win over Mumbai City FC, reserving special praise for goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury.

Two goals from Mario Arques and Pablo Morgado on the either side of the pitch secured the three points for the Men of Steel in their 2018/19 Indian Super League (ISL) opener at Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday.

“It’s a great performance from the players,” Ferrando said after the game. “I think we played the first hour very well and then, Mumbai played very well. In the last 15 minutes, we tried to keep the lines together and to keep the save because we knew we could have another chance. We won and we are very happy.”

Mumbai City gave Jamshedpur a run for their money in the final quarter of the match and would consider themselves extremely unlucky to see two goals disallowed for offside.

Though Ferrando was pleased with they way his side defended but admitted his defense need improvement despite a clean sheet.

“It was not as easy as the scoreboard suggests though. Mumbai pushed a lot. They move the ball quickly, they shift sides, they put a lot of pressure on our defensive organisation. But I thought the boys, with their defensive organisation, really restricted them a lot. We have to polish up our defending though.”

The Spaniard also heaped praise goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury for his contribution in the 2-0 win making a string of fine saves especially in the second-half to keep the Mumbai City attackers at bay.

“Yes, my keeper performed really well. He’s another player in the team and we need to play like one good unit. He did his work and I am happy for him. He did really well and made some good saves.” Ferrando said.

ISL 5: Jamshedpur FC two good for Mumbai City FC

MUMBAI: Jamshedpur FC began their campaign in the 2018/19 Indian Super League (ISL) with a 2-0 win over Mumbai City FC at Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday evening.

The Men of Steel scored twice in each halves through Mario Arques (28′) and Pablo Morgado (90+5′) to earn three crucial points on the road.

Of the two teams it was Jamshedpur who settled into the match first with a early attack on the Mumbai City goal through Jerry Mawihmingthanga, showing their intent to press high and put pressure on their opponents.

Jamshedpur looked a lot more comfortable on the ball, adopting a passing game that often had Mumbai City giving chase rather than being able to control the game themselves.

There were a slew of chances for the visitors but they were thwarted each time either by the penalty area management from Amrinder Singh, or their own difficulties finding the target.

The break eventually came for Jamshedpur in the 28th minute when Carlos Calvo crossed the ball into the Mumbai City area where a waiting Mario Arques headed it over the line to open the scoring.

Going behind spurred Mumbai City into action with a couple of decent forays into their opponent’s half, however, they were repeatedly denied by Jamshedpur, and forced to deal with a wave of rapid counter attacks.

The back and forth continued with Mumbai City gaining more possession. Nonetheless, Jorge Costa’s charges failed to stick to their passing game policy. The players seemed to be more keen on playing direct football sending long balls from the centre-line finding Modou Sougou or Rafael Bastos. However it wasn’t meant to be and Jamshedpur retained their one goal lead going into the breather.

Mumbai City continued with that momentum as they came out for the second-half as they forced Jamshedpur goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury into making a number of goal-denying saves.

The hosts started making greater inroads into their opponent’s final third as the second-half wore on with Mumbai City showing great determination in their pursuit of an equalizer, while Jamshedpur remained solid at the back.

The match started to become a little tenser as the clock counted down and Mumbai City even had couple of goals ruled out for offside in the final quarter.

First it was Mohammed Rafique who put the ball into the back of the net in the 77th minute, however, the referee ruled it out for offside. Then Sougou found the target seven minutes later but again the linesman had his flag up.

With five minutes of additional time Mumbai City threw themselves forward, but the visitors had other ideas as they scored through substitute Pablo Morgado in the additional time to to put the result beyond questions.

FC Pune City has a team for playoffs, says Iain Hume

Pune: In a team that has likes of Emiliano Alfaro, Marcelinho, adding Iain Hume makes it the most potent striking force. FC Pune City’s Iain Hume feels with him and the new players added, the team can surely do something they haven’t done in the past.

“To be honest, two (Alfaro and Marcelinho) of them for the last two years and myself for four years, we score goals, we work hard for the team. So I think everyone will expect us to keeping scoring goals and win the league but that isn’t going to be easy. It’s going to be a lot more competitive league this year. We are just going to continuing doing what we have for our teams and maybe do something for the team that we haven’t in the past,” said Hume on the sidelines of his team’s pre-season training in Goa.

The Canadian striker is Indian Super League’s highest goal-scorer with 28 goals in 59 appearances moved from Kerala Blasters FC to the Pune franchise earlier this season. For him, getting back on his feet is the biggest target than maintaining his top billing. “FC Pune City is doing everything to make me fit and that’s what my plan is, to get back to playing games,” said Hume.

For now, Hume is undergoing a strict recovery regime but seeing his club’s current squad in the pre-season, he is confident of the club making it to playoffs to begin with. “We have a right mix of experience and youth in the side and realistically we should look for a spot in playoffs and from their look at going into the finals,” Hume said.

He feels his addition along with other signings should influence the side in going that one step further. “Adding myself and couple of others, we are hoping that we can influence a little bit and who knows maybe go a step further than semifinals or maybe more,” Hume explained.

Ask him about Kerala and the prospect of facing his former side in Kochi, Hume is quick to profess his love and respect for the fans there. “I know the Kerala fans are incredible and they follow their team everywhere. The love and respect is mutual and I know it’s going to be hard to go there and play for us, but we have got a squad which is confident of achieving good results,” concluded Hume.

ATK Rope In Former Paris Saint Germain Striker

Kolkata: ATK have brought Brazilian striker Éverton Santos on board for the 2018-19 Indian Super League. Santos started his career playing in the youth groups of São José EC and used to play for French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain.

In 2011, the 31-year old moved to the South Korean K League Classic side Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and has since then played for clubs like FC Seoul and Ulsan Hyundai.

In 2017, Santos signed up with ISL franchise Mumbai City and was currently playing for Brazilian club Botafogo SP. The striker was the top scorer for Mumbai City last season with eight goals across both ISL and the Super Cup. He will be seen in ATK jersey for the fifth edition of the ISL.

He becomes the final foreign player to be signed for ATK this season. Santos is also the second Brazilian to be signed by the club after Gérson Vieira, who incidentally also played for Mumbai City FC.

“We have built a strong attacking team and Santos further strengthens our attack. He is not only a valuable centre-forward but he is equally brilliant as a winger on both flanks. His versatility adds more depth to this team.” ATK coach Steve Coppell said.

“I enjoy playing in the ISL and this is all the more special because I am joining a team that has been crowned champions twice. I hope to contribute significantly and bring the Cup home.” Éverton Santos said.
