ISL 5: Subhasish Roy Chowdhury praised by Cesar Ferrando

MUMBAI: Jamshedpur FC coach Cesar Ferrando was delighted with his side’s clinical 2-0 win over Mumbai City FC, reserving special praise for goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury.

Two goals from Mario Arques and Pablo Morgado on the either side of the pitch secured the three points for the Men of Steel in their 2018/19 Indian Super League (ISL) opener at Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday.

“It’s a great performance from the players,” Ferrando said after the game. “I think we played the first hour very well and then, Mumbai played very well. In the last 15 minutes, we tried to keep the lines together and to keep the save because we knew we could have another chance. We won and we are very happy.”

Mumbai City gave Jamshedpur a run for their money in the final quarter of the match and would consider themselves extremely unlucky to see two goals disallowed for offside.

Though Ferrando was pleased with they way his side defended but admitted his defense need improvement despite a clean sheet.

“It was not as easy as the scoreboard suggests though. Mumbai pushed a lot. They move the ball quickly, they shift sides, they put a lot of pressure on our defensive organisation. But I thought the boys, with their defensive organisation, really restricted them a lot. We have to polish up our defending though.”

The Spaniard also heaped praise goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury for his contribution in the 2-0 win making a string of fine saves especially in the second-half to keep the Mumbai City attackers at bay.

“Yes, my keeper performed really well. He’s another player in the team and we need to play like one good unit. He did his work and I am happy for him. He did really well and made some good saves.” Ferrando said.

ISL 5: Sergio Lobera refuses to use suspensions as excuse for not getting a win against NorthEast United

Guwahati, October 2, 2018: FC Goa Head Coach Sergio Lobera has always been a strong advocate of playing the game the ‘FC Goa’ way. It’s what he believes that the team derives its strength from. It’s also his belief that the men on the pitch on Sunday at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati were good enough to get the job done.

The Gaurs were missing two vital cogs in the form of Edu Bedia and Brandon Fernandes with both of them serving suspensions carried over from last season. The gaffer, however, didn’t want to use their absence as an excuse for not getting all three points in FC Goa’s season opener.

Speaking at the post-match press conference following a 2-2 draw against NorthEast United in the first game of the season, Lobera said, “When all the players are available, it is of course more easier. It’s always great to have options like Edu (Bedia) and Brandon (Fernandes) but their absence cannot be used as an excuse for not doing well.

“As a coach I have to find a solution for every situation.”

Lobera entrusted young teenager Mohammad Nawaz for the duty in between the stick in the season opener. A former Indian youth international, the boy from Manipur had an excellent season with the development side last year. His hard and perseverance finally paid off as he made his debut in the senior team.

Speaking on what made him trust the youngster and the current goalkeeping situation, the head coach, said, “As a coach I pick a keeper based on who is the fittest at the time. We haven’t made up our mind as who will be in between the sticks in our next game against Chennaiyin. We have three very good keepers to choose from and thus, I feel blessed.

“Age is not something we look at. Age is not a factor that I take into account while selecting players. It is always about who most suited to the occasion and today it was Nawaz.”

Whilst three points were not earned, the coach expressed happiness and coming away with a point against a team that provided “a stern test”. With lessons learnt from the encounter, FC Goa now flies off down south again to face Chennaiyin FC on October 6.

ISL 5: Fortress braces for cracker as Bengaluru, Chennaiyin lock horns

Bengaluru: The Sree Kanteerava Stadium is set to host a big-money clash, as the Indian Super League season kicks off for Carles Cuadrat’s Blues with a clash against Chennaiyin FC, on Sunday. John Gregory’s men went down a goal, responded with three of their own and then conceded harmlessly late to beat Bengaluru and be crowned champions at the Fortress, last season.

“We know that this is a repeat of last season’s final, but the ideal scenario is that we view it as the opening game of this season. We have studied them but we will be focusing on ourselves more and how we can make use of our strengths in this game,” said Cuadrat, speaking to the media ahead of the game.

The Blues assembled in July and headed to Spain for a pre-season that was full of lessons handed by teams like Barcelona B and Villareal B and Cuadrat admits his side returned from the tour, wiser and stronger.

“We played some friendlies in Spain and it was a good experience for some of our boys. They were tough opposition and now is the time for us to use that to our advantage as we begin the new league season,” the Spaniard said.

The friendlies also featured experienced centre-back Albert Serran who is expected to partner Juanan Gonzalez at the back and lend the defence some much-needed stability. Things have slowly begun coming together for Cuadrat and he will hope his team don’t take too long to find their rhythm. What will surely help is the fact that the Blues assembled much earlier than most ISL teams given their AFC Cup commitments.

“It’s true that our team was together much before the others, but these games depend on the performance that we put out on the day. We know that we have never beaten Chennaiyin FC at home, but every game has its own history and tomorrow we’ll be trying to change that,” said Cuadrat.

John Gregory’s midfield, meanwhile, was dealt a little blow after Dhanpal Ganesh was ruled out of the first phase of the League with an injury. Like Bengaluru, Chennaiyin too have shopped for three new foreigners this season in Eli Sabia, Andrea Orlandi, and Carlos Salom. But how the Englishman chooses to roll out his foreigners makes for interesting guessing.

Bengaluru’s attack will come up against the muscle and experience of Mailson Alves and Inigo Calderon which makes for a fantastic battle. Interestingly, both teams have conceded in every game they’ve played against each other and Sunday’s tie could stretch that statistic.

The match kicks off at 7.30 pm and will be telecast across the Star Sports network, HotStar and JioTV.

FC Pune City has a team for playoffs, says Iain Hume

Pune: In a team that has likes of Emiliano Alfaro, Marcelinho, adding Iain Hume makes it the most potent striking force. FC Pune City’s Iain Hume feels with him and the new players added, the team can surely do something they haven’t done in the past.

“To be honest, two (Alfaro and Marcelinho) of them for the last two years and myself for four years, we score goals, we work hard for the team. So I think everyone will expect us to keeping scoring goals and win the league but that isn’t going to be easy. It’s going to be a lot more competitive league this year. We are just going to continuing doing what we have for our teams and maybe do something for the team that we haven’t in the past,” said Hume on the sidelines of his team’s pre-season training in Goa.

The Canadian striker is Indian Super League’s highest goal-scorer with 28 goals in 59 appearances moved from Kerala Blasters FC to the Pune franchise earlier this season. For him, getting back on his feet is the biggest target than maintaining his top billing. “FC Pune City is doing everything to make me fit and that’s what my plan is, to get back to playing games,” said Hume.

For now, Hume is undergoing a strict recovery regime but seeing his club’s current squad in the pre-season, he is confident of the club making it to playoffs to begin with. “We have a right mix of experience and youth in the side and realistically we should look for a spot in playoffs and from their look at going into the finals,” Hume said.

He feels his addition along with other signings should influence the side in going that one step further. “Adding myself and couple of others, we are hoping that we can influence a little bit and who knows maybe go a step further than semifinals or maybe more,” Hume explained.

Ask him about Kerala and the prospect of facing his former side in Kochi, Hume is quick to profess his love and respect for the fans there. “I know the Kerala fans are incredible and they follow their team everywhere. The love and respect is mutual and I know it’s going to be hard to go there and play for us, but we have got a squad which is confident of achieving good results,” concluded Hume.
